How to Freelance Like a BOSS

Ever wonder why some people get ahead while others seem left behind? A lot of it has to do with leadership skills.

Whether you hold a leadership position within your company, on a volunteer board, or none at all, you can still use these tips to get ahead.

⭐ Be Committed
Not following through on your commitments can really do a number on your reputation. Mark off time on your calendar, if need be, to ensure you're completing the things you've said you would do. Not completing tasks and following up on promises (whether paid or volunteer) can translate into missed referral opportunities.

  • If You Say You’re Going to Do Something, Do It.

  • Show Up, Get Shit Done. NO EXCUSES.

  • Prioritize Your Commitments. Schedule Them.

⭐ Be Responsible
Think of leadership as a responsibility as much as it is an opportunity. Be a hands-on strategic partner. Offer an open-door policy. And, if you get overwhelmed, try delegating or outsourcing tasks to help free up your time. If you mess up, take responsibility, apologize when necessary, and learn from your mistakes so you don’t do them again.

  • Meet Deadlines, if Not Get Things Done Early.

  • Take Responsibility. Apologize When Necessary.

  • Encourage Involvement from Others.

⭐ Be Communicative
Be as transparent as possible. If someone reaches out, respond ASAP. Not responding at all or in a timely manner shows a lack of consideration and, frankly, does you no good. Even if you're slammed at the moment, at least shoot off a quick note that shares as much. Think about how clients make you feel when you turn something in and are waiting for a response.

  • Be Open & Transparent: All the Way Through.

  • Show Curiosity. Ask Questions. Seek to Understand.

  • RESPOND. No Matter How Busy You Are.

⭐ Be Professional
Be a role model in all that you do. From the way you carry yourself—your eye contact, posture, body language, even your handshake to the way you dress—your clothes, hair, jewelry, and more. Be cognizant of the impression you're giving off at all times. This is how you become admired, trusted, and respected.

  • Dress the Part. Even if Working From Home.

  • Maintain Poise … in All Interactions.

  • Be Careful What You Say on Social Media & in All Communications.

⭐ Be Authentic
If you’re going to talk the talk, you’d better be able to walk the walk. People will find out soon enough if you're not being yourself ... if you copy, lie, over exaggerate or fake something. Do you really want that egg on your face? Share the truth, even if it's uncomfortable. That’s how you earn respect.

  • Practice What You Preach: No Do as I Say, Not as I Do.

  • Don’t Over Exaggerate. BE HONEST & Forthcoming.

  • Have Self-Awareness. Be Humble. Be Human.

⭐ Be Empathetic

Like, really care! And show that you care. True leaders are not devoid of emotion. They have feelings just like everyone else. Showing that you’re human and caring for your clients, vendors, and professional peers is essential. Empathy means being able to understand the wants and needs of others. Do what you can to make others look and feel good about themselves.

  • Care for Others. Express that Care.

  • Show Appreciation. Offer Praise.

  • Be Willing to Look at the Truth, No Matter How Uncomfortable.

⭐ Be Bold
Gain confidence by showing vulnerability. It’s not a weakness; it’s actually a strength. Use that confidence to be decisive. This shows commitment and makes things easier for others. And, by all means, don't get walked on. Learn to set boundaries, and have the courage to walk away from anyone who oversteps a boundary or who no longer serves you.

  • Be Confident. Show Vulnerability.

  • Have Courage. Be Willing to Stand Up for Yourself and For Others.

  • Learn to Say No. Set Boundaries. Walk Away When Necessary.

⭐ Be Brave
Hold your head up. Things are going to happen. Curveballs come and go. Be ready to adapt or adjust as necessary. And know that you can face whatever adversity or uncertainty comes your way. Think, what's the worst that could happen? You fail? So what! At least you can say you tried.

  • Be Fearless in Everything You Do.

  • Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable. It’s How You Grow.

  • Take Risks. Take Chances. Just in Case They Pay Off.

⭐ Be Badass
Earning trust, respect, and admiration doesn't come easy. But try the suggestions above and watch your leadership skills take you far. Be smart about things.
